CURRENT OPERATION IN SOUTH AUSTRALIA

The success of the playing cards in the United States has influenced the introduction of the cards in South Australian prisons. The campaign has been successfully implemented due to the cooperation of all agencies, collaborating to support “any initiative that may provide closure to the victims of unsolved crimes”. The importance of solvability and advocating for co-victims’ rights as been emphasised as part of Operation Persistence led by Crime Stoppers SA, stating that the cards are likely to derive useful information from the criminal fringe. The success of the South Australia frameworks has led to two solved homicide cases, six arrests, four cases are before the courts and hundreds of reports to Crime Stoppers.

Police in South Australia have reported that the card strategy has been a very important and relatively inexpensive part of Operation Persist. As a result, it has been extended until at least 2022. Evidently, the cards are successful in generating new information and assisting police operations. Continued funding and investment in this program requires demonstrated success. In the beginning of 2019 the program entered its second phase.
